Humana - Guidance when you need it most

Neonatal Case Management

One out of every ten babies born in the U.S. will be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). To assist members in this situation, Humana provides Case Managers who specialize in the care of premature infants and sick newborns.

The NICU Case Manager's Role

Neonatal Case Managers provide education and support to parents whose children are in NICU. The goal is to send Humana's newest members home to a supportive, prepared environment with informed caregivers.

Services provided

Case managers work on-site to:

  • Support parents' needs

  • Provide education

  • Help with service coordination

Why this service is valuable

Neonatal case management is important to members and employers because:

  • 11 percent of newborns are born prematurely

  • Mothers of premature children spend 10 days longer on short-term disability than mothers of full-term babies

  • Direct healthcare costs to employers for a premature baby average 15 times higher than a healthy, full-term delivery

The bottom line

Participants in this voluntary program reduce the babies’ length of stay in the hospital by an average of 3.7 days.
